Everyone’s gums recede to some degree as we get older. One unfortunate consequence of this recession is the formation of black triangles at the base of the area between teeth. This blackness is simply the dark interior of the mouth that is now showing through thanks to the gum recession.

Porcelain veneers or bonding have been the only real alternatives to address formation of these black triangles, but Dr. Fong now often uses Bioclear. Bioclear is a cosmetic treatment that can fill these black triangles.

Last month’s blog talked about the formation of black triangles after the patient’s teeth have been moved with orthodontics or Invisalign. This month, let’s talk about Bioclear and black triangles formed by gum recession.

What Is Bioclear?

Bioclear uses flowable composite that is shaped by clear mylar wrapped around the tooth. The composite then flows to the shape and makes a perfect looking tooth, filling in the black triangles.

How Is Bioclear Done?

The first step in a Bioclear procedure is to lightly etch the teeth that will receive the Bioclear composite. This is different than preparation of the teeth for veneers, which involves shaving from .5 to.7mm of healthy tooth enamel from the fronts of the teeth. Once the teeth are etched, Dr. Fong places the thin mylar, called matrices, around each tooth. These are simply forms that will then hold the liquid composite resin that Dr. Fong will flow in each mold. These shapes are especially great for filling in black triangles.

To make the composite resin able to flow into the molds, it is heated slightly. Dr. Fong can then pour it into the mylar matrices. The composite is then cured and hardened. Now, Dr. Fong can shave down any areas he doesn’t like. The final step is to polish the composite, leaving the patient with a perfect, beautiful smile, without any black triangles.

What Are The Advantages Of Bioclear As An Alternative To Porcelain Veneers Or Dental Bonding?

These are the advantages of Bioclear:

  • Doesn’t require the removal of healthy tooth structure as with veneers
  • Restorations last longer than dental bonding and as long as veneers
  • Great for closing black triangles
  • Less expensive than porcelain veneers
  • More resistant to staining than dental bonding
  • Treatment may be completed in a single visit
  • Safe for the gums
  • Easily repaired if damaged
