Porcelain Veneers Are a Cover-Up Even Robert Mueller Would Be Proud Of

No one’s teeth are naturally perfect: some are a little bit crooked; some have a slight gap between a couple teeth; some are stained beyond what whitening can correct; and some are chipped or cracked. Sure, living in L.A. where many people have had “some work done” it’s easy to assume other people have perfect teeth. More likely they’ve had porcelain veneers applied.
Porcelain veneers are one of the most effective means of achieving a more pleasing, beautiful smile in a short period of time. Dr. Fong provides porcelain veneers for his Santa Ana patients as a means to make their smiles perfect without years of more involved procedures.
What are porcelain veneers?
Similar in concept to the veneers you know from furniture, porcelain veneers are thin porcelain shells that are placed over the front of your natural teeth to alter the tooth position, shape, size, and color. The aim of veneers is to eliminate the patient’s aesthetic dental issues with a natural looking cover. Porcelain is used for veneers because of its appearance, which closely resembles the shine and slight translucence of your natural teeth. Plus, dental porcelain resists staining and is very strong.
What aesthetic problems could be covered with porcelain veneers?
Veneers are a great way to cover cosmetic flaws with your teeth:
- Deeply stained teeth that don’t respond to teeth whitening
- Chipped teeth
- Broken teeth
- Slightly crooked teeth
- Irregularly shaped teeth
- Gaps between teeth
It’s important to note, however, that porcelain veneers with Dr. Fong are only cosmetic solutions to flaws with your smile. If you have issues such as gum disease, tooth decay, or receding gums, those types of problems need to be addressed before porcelain veneers can be applied.
How are veneers placed?
Once you’ve consulted with Dr. Fong and the two of you agreed porcelain veneers are the way to go, applying them takes two appointments. During the first appointment, your teeth are prepared for the veneers. This involves shaving a tiny fraction (from 0.3 mm to 0.5 mm) of tooth enamel off the front of the teeth receiving veneers. This makes room for the veneers on the fronts of the teeth. Once we’ve shaved the enamel off we take impressions of your teeth and send them off to the dental lab for the fabrication of your veneers. This process takes about a week; in the interim Dr. Fong will apply temporary veneers to your teeth to protect them.
When your custom-made porcelain veneers arrive at Dr. Fong’s you return for a second appointment. He first checks your veneers for color match and fit. If necessary, he shaves tiny bits off the veneers to make the perfect fit. Once both you and Dr. Fong are satisfied, the veneers are permanently cemented onto your teeth and you’re finished.
Now your smile looks like the perfect smiles you’ve seen on others!
